This is the second time I have read this book. Karen Rose is one of my all time favourite authors. She writes- superbly- the relationships between family, friends and enemies. She has us wanting to be in the tight-knit group of people that she has created, or to be as far away as possible from the evil monsters that we encounter in her stories.
Marie Grace Winters was abused- mentally and physically, by her husband. If that wasn’t bad enough, he was a police officer. And if that wasn’t bad enough, they had a son- who also endured his father’s disgusting behaviour. When Marie Grace is thrown down the stairs for the umpteenth time and ends up in the hospital for 3 months, she resolves that this will be the last time.
Fast forward 7 years, and Marie Grace Winters is now Caroline Stewart- an independent, beautiful PA at the university she also studies at. She has a best friend in Dana, who helped her out when she left her husband. She has a polite, well brought up son, a home, a job, she’s on her way to a law degree, and she’s just met her handsome new boss, Max! Things are on the up, until Rob Winters finds out that Marie Grace was not abducted and killed all those years ago, but stole his son and ran away.
He will stop at nothing to find her and his boy. Karen writes Rob so well. He is evil. He is despicable and nasty and we hate him as soon as we meet him. You want to just reach in and throw him away. He will kill indiscriminately, he will threaten and intimidate with ease. You do not want to meet him in a dark alleyway. I felt scared reading about him and what he was planning. I felt anxious for Caroline.
This book is fast paced, thrilling and beautiful to read. As mentioned in my reviews of other Karen Rose books, my favourite thing about her books are the relationships between the characters. She writes them so well, and I can imagine each and every one as a real person.
Read this book. And then read all the others. I love Karen Rose.
