Goodreads Synopsis
In 1928, Bonaventure Circus outcast Pippa Ripley must decide if uncovering her roots is worth putting herself directly in the path of a killer preying on the troupe. Decades later, while determining if an old circus train depot will be torn down or preserved, Chandler Faulk is pulled into a story far darker and more haunting than she imagined.
Our review
This book showcases some extraordinary talent in terms of character development and seamless travel between time periods. I was in awe at how the author managed to keep every single one of the characters separate from one another, as they can so often get blurred and I have trouble remembering who is who. Not in this book. Everyone is their own person and is so different, well done Jaime Jo Wright.
The book flips back and forth between the past and present and in both time frames there is something going on that keeps you entertained. There was never a point where I wanted to just stay in one time period, I was very happy going back to the past to find out what had happened, then tying it up with the present day narrative.
There is spookish intrigue, creepy houses, heart-breaking personal stories and a fabulous cast of characters. Plenty of ghost references here, and although I’m not one for the supernatural, I suspended belief for a little while and actually enjoyed this one.
Recommended for those looking for a lighter thriller, split time periods, fun circus background (!) and general contemporary fiction.
Happy Reading
